We have spent the last two days on the Isle of Skye off the west coast of Scotland. We are home based in the town of Portree and have traveled all over. The weather has turned windy, rainy, and cold, so we haven’t done much hiking, but we did sneak in a little today.
Here is a beautiful picture of the coast of the island with a waterfall tumbling into the sea. In the background is Kilt Rock. If you enlarge the photo a little, you can see that there are ridges in the rock that look like the pleats of a kilt.
Since it was not good hiking weather we drove around most of the island. A lot of it was very narrow, single-track roads. If the oncoming cars weren’t bad enough, there were the wonderfully distracting sheep. Here they are lined up watching the passing tourists. Do you think they comment among themselves on the tourists that go by? The experienced mom in the first photo took one look at us and said to her lambs, “I am going to show them my ‘good side.’” “Here’s lookin at ewe!”
All the while the old man was simply staring us down. We were intimidated by the sheep!
Our Skye accommodations took a step down from the rest of our trip. Here is our room for the night. And you had to shovel your own peat for the fire. Just kidding! This is the Skye Museum of Island Life and was very interesting. Boy, this would have been a a tough life 200-300 years ago. And we learned that someone lived in this house up to 1969.
While we were at the museum, Nessie, Scotty, and Piranha noticed some Woolly Coos approaching the car. They sheltered in the car, but wanted their pictures taken with the Woolly Coo.
Today, the weather improved slightly and we hiked a short trail called The Fairy Pools. They were really pretty. The first picture shows the trail from the parking lot. The rest are the pools and small waterfalls along the way.
Nessie, Scotty, and Piranha thought the waterfalls were cool as well.
Then we visited the Talisker distillery which was interesting. And dinner was, once again, fish and chips. Very tasty.
Tomorrow we are hoping for better weather to fit in a hike and then it is repacking for our return to Glasgow on Saturday and home on Sunday.
God bless,
Coe
