“Sit here and feel the peace of Iona.” Photo by Coe Hutchison

There is a very short worship song that I have loved for many years. It comes from the Iona Community in Scotland and is titled Don’t Be Afraid. Here is a link to a nice rendition of it you might enjoy.

The gist of the song is that we don’t need to be afraid because God’s love is stronger than our fears. I find that idea to be so helpful and powerful. It doesn’t say that there are no fears. It doesn’t say that fear-inducing things won’t happen. It says that always, and in every case, God’s love is stronger than our fears. God’s love is stronger.

We also know that God’s love is greater than our sins. Yup, we sin, all of us. We hurt those we love, we act and speak when we should not do so. We do not act or speak when we should and God’s heart is broken at our sin. But God’s love is even greater than our sin. God’s love is greater.

God’s love is bigger than our plans. We make all kinds of plans for life. If you are like me, you then expect God to get on board and bring your plans to fruition. Thank God that God doesn’t always adhere to our plans. For God’s love is even bigger than our plans. God’s love is bigger.

God’s love is stronger than our wounds. So many have been hurt, wounded, abused, betrayed, oppressed, and treated unjustly. These wounds may leave life-long scars. But God’s love is stronger. God’s love can overcome these wounds, and heal these scars. God’s love is stronger.

God’s love is bigger than our broken relationships. We may be haunted by what could have been. We may feel guilt over our own actions that ended relationships, or pain from the actions of others. God’s love is bigger than our guilt and bigger than our pain. God’s love is bigger.

In the biggest of the big pictures, God’s love is even greater than our death. Our death will end all of what we have known throughout our life. All except for God’s love. For through Jesus Christ, God’s love is even greater than our death. God’s love will be forever.

God’s love is stronger, greater, bigger. Abide in God’s love. It is FOR YOU!

God bless,
Coe
